THE FEMME COLLECTIVE SHOWS US WHAT V STANDS FOR!

You are not a mistake. You are not a problem to be solved. But you won’t discover this until you are willing to stop banging your head against the wall of shaming and caging and fearing yourself. ” ― Geneen Roth

V is for Victorious

V is for Valiant

V is for Valid

V is for Valuable

V is for Venerable

V is Vivacious

V is Voluptuous

V is for Vagina

Tonight, Freetown will be on fire with poetry, spoken word and candid experience sharing as Femme Collective hosts the V-Monologue in Sierra Leone for the very first time!

ABOUT THE TRAILBLAZERS

Femme Collective is a new platform that seeks to harmonize the goals and activities of women’s organizations in Sierra Leone to reduce duplication, improve effectiveness and efficiency and promote collaboration among women to achieve a common goal. The organization will provide a collective platform to promote women’s voices, rights, activities and empowerment. The organization was registered in January 2019. V-Day Freetown will be the first event organized by Femme Collective.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT V-DAY

The World Health Organization estimates that 1 out of every 3 women worldwide have experienced either physical or sexual violence[1]. In 1996 Eve Ensler’s award-winning play The Vagina Monologues inspired hundreds of women to share their stories of rape, incest, battery, sex slavery and female genital mutilation. A movement was born out of the untold stories of women, and in 1998, V-Day was established to end violence against women and girls worldwide. Today, V-Day is a global activist movement that has reached billions of people through performances, word of mouth, and the media.

And …..THEN THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES

Every year, volunteer activists from around the world produce The Vagina Monologues, the art piece from which the V-Day movement was born. V-Day also includes various activities such as films, exhibitions, workshops and fundraising activities dedicated to raising awareness about gender-based violence. All proceeds from V-Day events are donated to local charities and organizations that work to end violence against women and girls. Since 1998 The V-Day movement has supported the establishment and maintenance of safe houses and rape crisis centres, caused laws to be changed to protect women and girls, and organized large-scale benefits and campaigns to educate people and change social attitudes towards violence against wome

The official title for the event is V-Day Freetown 2019: The V Monologues. A culturally-adapted version of the Vagina Monologues will be produced in Freetown, and all funds raised will be donated to the Rainbo Centre. The Rainbo Centre is the only provider of free medical and psychosocial services for survivors of Gender Based Violence in Sierra Leone. The event is being organized by Femme Collective Sierra Leone.
