22 STEM GIRL AMBASSADORS : EMPOWERED WITH PUBLIC SPEAKING SKILLS!

Since 2016 STEM Women has been recruiting primary school female students who have expressed an interest in STEM careers to be mentees of the organization. The organization launched the STEM Girl Ambassador program in order to put these mentees in leadership positions wherein they are tasked with the responsibility of helping the organization to encourage students to consider further study of STEM subjects and progression into related careers, thereby inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals.

This program is also designed to provide the following benefits for the mentees:

  • Increase their sense of achievement

  • Increase their presentation skills

  • Increase their confidence

  • Increase their sense of satisfaction with their work

There are 22 STEM Girl Ambassadors – half of them are in primary school while the other half are in junior secondary school. They are all committed to offering their time and enthusiasm to help bring STEM subjects to life and demonstrate the value of them in life and careers.

Before they start executing their duties, STEM Women organized a Public Speaking Workshop for all the Ambassadors which was designed to help them overcome their fear of speaking in public, guide them on how to choose a topic and structure their speech and also give them tips on how they can effectively connect and communicate with their audience.

The sessions were facilitated by Angela Angwenyi, Aminata Dumbuya and Ariana Oluwole. The facilitators coached the Ambassadors on how they can use effective communication to form connections, influence decisions and motivate change.
