In Sierra Leone a notable media personality took on a journey to advocate for and support the aged exactly a year ago. Doreen Barrie believes that ‘ Old is Gold’ and holds dear the scripture which states that we should “Honor your father and mother” as this is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it, namely, “so you will live well and have a long life – Ephesians 6:2-12. This led her to create a platform for the aged commonly called DOFA, that has won the hearts of many in Sierra Leone and beyond.
This year to mark The International Day of Older Persons 2021: A special day for elderly which is celebrated every year on October 1. (The aim of the day is to spread awareness about issues affecting the elderly). In the past weeks, DOFA announced and has been showcasing the aged in a different light with a thanksgiving celebration, health awareness campaign, a football match among peers and just this weekend a Beauty Pageant for the elderly.
Let’s dive into The *Miss Old is Gold Beauty Pageant* organized by Dorwontony Organization for Aged – DOFA for the aged really shows that beauty is not limited to the young. It was an extraordinary scene at the Enid O’reilly Wright YWCA hall to see women of elegance displaying their beauty and intelligence. The contestants really showed that age is just a number. They reminded us that one can age gracefully and with a sense of humor. Five communities took part in this year’s contest.
