In the heart of Sierra Leone, a force to be reckoned with is emerging, challenging the status quo, and reshaping the narrative for girls and young women. Samesther Hannah Kargbo, the dynamic Executive Director of the Girls Advocacy Development Network, is not just a name but a beacon of hope and change.

Ms. Kargbo makes every day The International Day of the Girl, making it essential to spotlight leaders like her, who are not only breaking barriers but also creating new pathways for generations to come.

A Visionary in the Making

Samesther is not just a final year student at the prestigious Fourah Bay College, delving into the nuances of Gender and Development studies; she is a visionary leader with a passion for solving social issues affecting girls and young women in Sierra Leone. With a clear and logical mind, she takes a practical approach to problem-solving, demonstrating a relentless drive to see things through completion. Her journey in advocacy spans over two years, during which she has not only advocated for adolescent girls, youth, and children but also managed and led teams across multiple sectors.

A Trailblazer’s Achievements

Samesther’s achievements speak volumes about her commitment to the cause. From being an award-winning girls champion (2020-2022) to receiving recognition as the Best Youth Representative by the ECOWAS Youth Council in 2021, she has consistently raised the bar. Notably, she organized the largest platform for girls in Sierra Leone, the National Girls Summit, with the support of UNAIDS and UN Women. In 2021, 300 girls participated, marking a significant milestone in empowering the next generation. At only 21 years old, she is the current chair of the UN Youth Advisory Group (UNYAG), Sierra Leone.

The accolades don’t end there; Samesther’s shows efforts in her outstanding contributions. Such as sensitizing 200 boys on sexual and gender-based violence in Western Urban and Western Rural areas or while supporting 250 girls with menstrual hygiene kits in Kenema district showcase her hands-on approach to making a tangible impact.

Leadership Beyond Borders

Samesther’s leadership extends beyond national boundaries. She played a pivotal role in organizing and technically supporting the launch of the National Youth Policy in Sierra Leone.  To name a few, her influence reaches Morovia, Liberia, where she mobilized and organized adolescent girls for a regional summit. Serving as the Vice President of the ECOWAS Youth Council in Sierra Leone for three consecutive years, Samesther has proven her dedication to regional youth development.

With four years of experience as the Executive Director of GADNet SL, Samesther has honed her skills in advocacy and leadership. Her role as a panellist for the selection of SHE LEADS Global and Regional Representatives underscores her reputation as an  emerging influential figure in the global arena.

A Voice for Change

Samesther’s commitment to advocacy goes beyond traditional channels. She has actively participated in national and regional events, including the 2021 National Youth Summit organized by UNDP and UNFPA. Her presence in the planning committee for the development and launching of the national youth policy and strategy showcases her involvement in shaping policies that impact the youth.

Her advocacy extends to the airwaves, where she has made several TV and radio presentations, leveraging social media for impactful campaigns. Samesther understands the power of communication, and her skills in management, communication, problem-solving, and design make her a force to be reckoned with.
