STEP INTO YOUR POETIC POWER AS SALONE UNVEILS A MIC AND A STAGE

“Creativity is contagious, pass it on.” – Albert Einstein

Meet a group of young promising Sierra Leonean writers and art lovers who have taken up the responsibility of organizing A mic and A stage which includes poetry in music and a storytelling session. The team is branded under the name “Ink Salone”. This event tagged “Creativity is contagious, pass it on.”  is scheduled for the 22nd April, 2022 at the YCWCA New Hall, Freetown.

The theme for this year’s event is “climbing the POE-TREE, showing forth thee need for poetry and it’s relevance in entertainment”.

As organizers their main aim is to make A mic and A stage a platform for aspiring, inspiring and talented poets. Spoken word artists from across the nation will  be chanced to meet and perform before renowned poets, celebrities and dignitaries. They hope that this will enhance their ability and make them bold enough to share out the messages hidden in them unto the world.

This is a brilliant opportunity to showcase their God given talent(s) and also making a meaningful impact to Sierra Leone.

WHAT DOES “A MIC AND A STAGE” MEAN?

A mic and A stage, is an event set to be happening annually. It will be a convergence of  poets, musicians & story tellers – providing them with a stage which the organisers hope will create a platform for all. As a team they would love to see the nation embrace poetry like they do music.

There is no music without poetry, you read those lines first and see a message in them before adding melody, poetry is a food for the soul, it is a lifestyle, people live poetry.

WHY THE THEME ? “Climbing the POE-TREE, showing forth its relevance in entertainment”

Over the years, the organisers believe that poetry has been the most underrated form of art in the entertainment industry. The team’s research revealed that the major platforms poetry has in Sierra Leone is through live competitions. There are hundreds of youth with  powerful messages hidden in them, their greatest desire would be to share with the world; poetry can be that platform. Most of them when asked, said they were afraid to show up because of the fear of being criticized and judged. Most of  them had a strong phobia for criticism, to such an extent that they might even decide to drop the art and never ink a page again, leaving the gift and message in them , until it rots! In other instances, some creatives have already inked pages but lack the platform to share their work.

This is why the Ink Salone team is set to take those pieces from the page to the stage, we are climbing the ‘poe -tree’ for poetry to be heard.

Poetry is not just about inking a page for all to read, “poetry is a voice, so when heard please listen”.
